New life in 500 year old Steyrdorf building

The building with the round tower towers prominently on Wieserfeldplatz. Exactly this tower opposite the parking garage dates back to the Middle Ages. For many years, the tower and the building behind it housed a glazing company, most recently the building lay idle for more than a decade. Since the beginning of April 2023, the tenants have had the keys to the partially medieval building. Ten high-quality apartments were built here.

It is not without pride that the Steyr architectural office Archionic refers to the project, which was completed within 13 months of construction. “It’s a shame that a building lies unused in the middle of the best residential area in the old town,” says architect Dietmar Seyrlehner. Ten apartments ranging in size from 35 to 108 square meters, a total of 592 square meters of living space and 40 square meters of commercial space on the street-side ground floor have been built in the Steyrdorf district.

The part of the building that cannot be seen from the street side had been roofed over by the previous user decades ago. A 100 square meter, green inner courtyard has now been created here. For Archionic, this flagship project reflects its own philosophy. “We are showing that high-quality and affordable living space can be created without taking up space,” says architect Markus Knöbl.
