Given that the book focuses on the 20-year rebuilding effort of the World Trade Center, what specific personal experiences did Larry Silverstein draw upon to guide his writing in “The Rising”?
Archyde News Editor’s Interview: Meet Larry Silverstein, Author of “The Rising”
Archyde News Editor (ANE): Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming Larry Silverstein, the author of “The Rising: The Twenty-Year Battle to Rebuild the World Trade Center.” Larry, thank you for joining us.
Larry Silverstein (LS): Thank you for having me. I’m delighted to be here.
ANE: Let’s dive right in. Your book chronicles the extraordinary effort to rebuild the World Trade Center following the 9/11 attacks. What inspired you to write about this complex and emotional story?
LS: Well, I was deeply involved in the rebuilding process myself, as the chairman of Silverstein Properties, which owned the World Trade Center at the time of the attacks. After witnessing the destruction and its impact on our city and nation, I felt compelled to tell the story of how we came together to rebuild, not just the buildings, but the hope and resilience of New Yorkers.
ANE: “The Rising” covers a span of twenty years. How did you approach balancing such a vast timeline and ensuring the narrative flowed smoothly?
LS: It was indeed a challenge, but I structured the book around key milestones – from the immediate aftermath of the attacks to the completion of the new World Trade Center and the surrounding memorials and buildings. I also focused on the people at the heart of the story – the first responders, the families of the victims, the architects, and the construction workers. Their stories helped knit together the broader narrative.
ANE: You worked closely with top architects like David Childs and Daniel Libeskind. What were some of the most innovative or unexpected aspects of the rebuilding process?
LS: There were many innovative aspects, but I’d say one of the most significant was the incorporation of sustainability principles into the new designs. The World Trade Center complex is now one of the largest LEED platinum-certified projects in the world. But the process wasn’t always smooth. We had to navigate various challenges, including the financial crisis of 2008, which threatened to derail the entire project.
ANE: Looking back, what message do you hope readers take away from “The Rising”?
LS: I hope readers come away with a deepened understanding of the resilience of the human spirit, the power of collective effort, and the importance of remembering our past – the good and the bad – to shape a stronger future. the rebuilding of the World Trade center is a testament to how a city and a nation can recover from tragedy and emerge even stronger.
ANE: Thank you, Larry, for sharing your insights and for your dedication to telling this crucial story. Readers can now pick up their own copy of “The Rising” at local bookstores and online retailers.
LS: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure being part of this conversation.
