New Legislation Allows Employees to Keep Their Mobile Numbers After Leaving Jobs

Employees who leave their jobs will soon be able to keep their mobile phone number if they already had it before taking up their duties, according to a decision made on Tuesday by the Social Affairs Committee, on a proposal from Groen MP Stefaan Van Hecke.

Employees often use their own mobile phone number to register their subscription with their employer. Some companies then refuse to allow these workers to keep their number when they leave. Some even add a clause in the contract forcing the employee to waive the right to use the number in question.

The bill aims to allow a person who already had this telephone number before taking office to keep it when he leaves the company.

“When you think regarding everything involved in setting up a new telephone number, you realize how this number is no longer just for making a few calls here and there,” comments Mr. Van Hecke. The telephone number has today become an instrument of identification, for example for banking institutions, via their applications, or for the administration, via Itsme. “You don’t change your phone number like that. This approach has a significantly greater impact than in the past. »
