Deputies of the National Assembly are preparing a law to regulate social networks, after the president Nicolas Maduro claimed that WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok are instruments that “multiply hatred and fascism.”
The law is being drafted in Parliament, especially after the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) blocked the X network for 10 days on the president’s orders for “spreading hate messages.”
Deputy Imarú González, vice president of the Family Commission, said that the objective is to review or create a regulation that regulates the use of social networks, due to their growing negative impact on children and adolescents, as well as the violence unleashed on these digital platforms.
Law on the way to regulate social networks
The discussion on this topic is in response to a call made by Maduro, who stated that there is no national regulation in Venezuela on the matter.
Arelis Orta, another member of the commission, stressed that “regulation is necessary to protect young people from inappropriate content and risky situations such as cyberbullying and emotional instability.”
One of the proposals will be to establish control and supervision mechanisms through digital education between parents and children, so that they can navigate safely in the virtual environment.
Education and oversight are essential to support the executive’s instructions, which involve this legislative body and other bodies, such as the Ministry of People’s Power for Communication and Information.
