After a dramatic accident, the State of South Australia will claim a special license for drivers of racing cars with a power-to-weight ratio greater than 375 horsepower per 1000 kg.

You will soon need a special license to drive a very powerful car in the state of South Australia. This state in the south of the country has just passed a new law which will require having a special category to get behind the wheel of a racing car, reports the specialized site Motor1.

270 drivers concerned

Tighter regulations following a dramatic accident in 2019: the driver of a Lamborghini Huracan had fatally hit a 15-year-old girl.

A total of 270 drivers will have to pass this “Class U” of the Australian license, via online training being developed by local authorities, specifies le site Car Expert. The measure will come into effect from December 1, 2024.

Which models are affected?

The vehicles affected? Models weighing less than 4.5 tons with a power-to-weight ratio greater than or equal to 276 kW (375 horsepower) per 1000 kg. A rather relevant ratio for evaluating the performance of a machine and which is often found expressed in kg/horse: the Australian limit is then found at 2.66 kg per horse, not to be exceeded.

“Ultra High Powered Vehicle (UHPV)” in the text of this new law to designate these “ultra high power vehicles” (hence this “Class U” license), among which we logically find very sporty cars: the Lamborghini Huracan, 2.3 kg/hp, or a Ferrari 458 Speciale, at 2.4 kg/hp.

The law also provides for new penalties: it will be forbidden to activate the sport mode and deactivate certain driving aids on open roads, such as ABS or traction control, under penalty of a fine of 5000 Australian dollars, i.e. almost 3000 euros.

Penalties are also toughened for dangerous driving resulting in death or serious injury: the maximum penalty increases from one year to 5 years in prison. If the driver was under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, or precisely if he was driving a UHPV without this new authorization, the penalty might increase to 7 years in prison.
