Dubai: The UAE government has implemented new labor reforms for those working in the public sector. The main change is that you can work a maximum of ten hours four days a week and take the remaining three days off. The new reform will come into effect from July 1. The new regulations also offer employees the opportunity to demand changes in their working practices.
Employees may request that part-time work be converted to full-time or vice versa. But the final decision in this regard should be taken by the employer. The government has also announced guidelines for part-time jobs where employees under this category must work a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 32 hours in a week.
What is a “compressed working week
Part-time employees must work at least one day during normal business days. But not more than four days a week. This “compressed working week” is one of the five work models outlined in Cabinet Resolution No. 48 of 2023, which will be implemented for federal government employees from July 1.
The general rule is that an employee must work eight hours a day. That means you have to work 40 hours in five days. But some days the working hours may be longer. In this way, if an employee works four days a week for 10 hours, it is possible to complete the contractual 40 hours. They will get three days off in a week.
The government has launched new schemes with the aim of increasing the efficiency of government agencies. According to Article 2 of the Act, the “compressed working week” clause, which provides three days off to employees who work ten hours over four days, is included, according to reports.
Workers also welcome the new reform. Officials say the introduction of the law is likely to boost optimism and hope among private sector workers. At the same time, the authorities have not yet clarified whether this work model will be implemented in the private sector as well.
