New Kiswa for Kaaba: A Majestic Tradition Upheld on the Hijra New Year

A new Kiswa (robe) was draped over the Kaaba on Muharram 1, the beginning of the new year according to the Meccan Hijri calendar. On Tuesday night, a team of experts prepared the new Kiswa Charthi under the supervision of the officials of the two Thirugeha Offices.

The Kiswa was brought to Makkah Masjudul Haram from the King Abdul Aziz Kiswa manufacturing complex in special vehicles with a security escort. The Kiswah consists of four large main robes, belts and robes that cover the four walls of the Kaaba. Qur’anic verses are beautifully inscribed on every part of the Kiswa, stitched with golden threads. Kiswa takes regarding 850 kg of the world’s finest pure silk, dyed black, and takes a year to make.

More than 100 skilled artisans worked to produce the 56 embroidered kiswas, each piece taking between 60 and 120 days to embroider. A team of 200 Saudi technicians is working at the King Abdulaziz Complex to build the Kiswa.

120 kg of gold thread and 100 kg of silver thread are used while weaving Kiswa. It is also said to be manufactured using the world’s largest computer-controlled sewing machine, which is 16 meters long. Putting on a new Kiswa at the Kaaba following Hajj is a centuries-old tradition.
