New Israeli order to withdraw from Khan Yunis after Gaza school attack

Israel South Gaza A new evacuation order was issued overnight in the Gaza Strip city of Khan Yunis, forcing thousands of Palestinians to evacuate in the dark as the air around them echoed with shelling.

According to the Reuters news agency, the Israeli army said it was targeting Hamas militants, who it said were targeting the areas. Israel were used for attacks and firing rockets.

An Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza on Saturday killed at least 90 Palestinians who had taken refuge there, according to the Civil Defense Service. The attack sparked international protests and condemnation of Israel.

The Israeli military said it struck a command post of Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, killing 19 militants, a charge denied by both groups.

In Khan Yunis, Israel’s evacuation instructions cover the central, eastern and western districts.

The announcement was posted on the X and in the form of text and audio messages to residents’ phones, saying: ‘For your own safety, move immediately to the newly created human zone. The area you are in is considered a dangerous war zone.’

The Israeli military says it hit 30 Hamas military targets in the past 24 hours, including military structures, anti-tank missile launching posts and weapons storage facilities.

Hundreds of Palestinians were forced to relocate overnight

Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been displaced and much of the Strip has been reduced to rubble, according to the United Nations.

Palestinian and UN officials say there is no safe zone in Gaza. Areas designated as safe zones, such as al-Mawasi in western Khan Yunis, have been bombarded several times by Israeli forces.

In the middle of the night, hundreds of Palestinians left their homes and shelters and headed west to al-Mawasi and north to Deir al-Balah, already filled with hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

Zaki Muhammad, 28, of western Khan Yunis told Reuters: ‘We are tired. This is the 10th time my family and I have had to leave our shelter.’

He told Reuters via a chat app: ‘People are fleeing to an unknown place with their belongings, their children, their hopes and their fears, because there is no safe place. We are running from death to death.’

Following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on southern Israel, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken prisoner, Israel has launched an offensive against Gaza.
