The new Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz, reiterated Tuesday the objective of ending the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in the offensive currently underway against Gaza, since October 7th.
“We will achieve our objective of overthrowing Hamas”, said Katz, whose main mission is to return home the hostages who have been held by the Palestinian militia in Gaza since October 7th.
Speaking at the ceremony in which he received the portfolios from his predecessor, Eli Cohen, the new minister indicated that his Government’s commitment is to bring back the hostages with new initiatives and exert pressure at a global level.
Katz also referred to the importance of Israel maintaining international legitimacy to continue the war against Hamas, in the Gaza Strip, and against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
After holding the position, between February 2019 and May 2020, Katz returns to the position in the midst of the military campaign, in the Gaza Strip, and at a crucial moment for Israeli diplomacy, criticized by a large part of the international community for its response to the Hamas attacks of October 7th.
