London: Ben Stokes has been appointed captain of the England Test cricket team. Stokes’ appointment follows the resignation of Joe Root, who completed five years as captain. Stokes, England’s number one all-rounder, is currently one of the few players to have secured a place in the playing XI.

Stokes is the 81st captain of the England Test team. Stokes has been nominated by Rob Key, the new managing director of the England cricket team. It was approved by the England Cricket Board on Thursday followingnoon.

Stokes will face a tough challenge to lead England, who have won just one of their last 17 Tests. England are bottom of the points table at the World Test Championship (2021–23), having not won a single game in their last five series.

He had earlier responded that he did not want to take over the captaincy, but the decision was changed following Root’s resignation.

‘England are proud to have the opportunity to lead the Test team. Thanks to Root for all his contributions to English cricket. Root is a player who has played a huge role in developing my leadership skills in the dressing room. I’m sure Root will be there to support me in the captaincy, “Stokes said.
