new information on AMD’s plans

The processor generation AMD Strix Point planned for mi-2024 et Halo postponed to 2025. Today we discover the YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead provide an update on the AMD APU roadmap Ryzen.

The YouTuber’s latest video discusses a recent leak that reveals the internal plan ofAMD for future processors under the architecture Zen 5. This plan focuses on APU which will include an architecture of integrated graphics such as RDNA1, RDNA2 or RDNA3.5. Additionally, some future architectures could incorporate AI accelerators known as XDNA1 or 2. A bit like Intel in integrating AI into its next processors as well.

AMD Strix Point: AI-boosted performance?

The roadmap shows the different performance segments that AMD aims to cover with its upcoming Zen 4 and Zen 5 architectures. 2024l’architecture Dragon Rangedesigned for high performance gaming systems will be AMD’s predominant choice in the market. The roadmap does not indicate any updates for the following year, but in 2025series Fire Range will introduce the latest architecture on Zen 5.

But the Strix Point generation is also very interesting, notably with the Strix Point and Strix Halo APUs (also called Sarlak). The first is the official successor to Phoenix which was expected at the beginning of next year, since AMD usually releases new series at this time of year. Although it is a fact that AMD usually made announcements during CES, the actual launch was usually postponed until the following months and this is what this roadmap probably shows.

According to this roadmap, processors AMD Strix Point are equipped with CPU cores under Zen 5 and hearts GPU RDNA 3.5 combined with XDNA 2. We would be launching in mid-2024. The roadmap confirms that the series will feature 12 Zen 5 cores and what is new is the AI performance from 45 to 50 TOPS. In fact, all future high-end APUs are expected to offer this level of AI performance.

Even more interesting, the Strix Halo who is supposed to offer 16 Zen 5 cores et up to 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units for a launch in 2025 and not in 2024 as previously planned. This means that the new APU segment defined by AMD as “Elite Experiences” will not be launched next year. This chip is also said to feature the AI XDNA2 chip with 45-50 TOPS performance.

The reason for the AI performance increase is likely a new requirement for the Windows 12 operating system, which is supposed to require around 50 TOPS as mentioned by other leaks.

AMD Zen 4 “Hawk Point”, Zen 4 “Escher” and Zen 5 “Kraken Point”

This new roadmap also confirms what will happen for the generation Hawk Point which is now confirmed to feature 8 cores under Zen 4. This is probably the update of the Phoenix chip which features cores GPU/AI RDNA3 et XDNA1. As the roadmap shows, it offers 16 TOPS of AI acceleration performance. His successor, called Kraken Point, will also feature 8 cores, but with the newer Zen 5 architecture and an improved RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture. The AI core will be updated in XDNA2but the node will remain at 4nm.

We finally have data on the generation Escherwhich is an 8-core chip under Zen 4 with an architecture RDNA3 et XDNA1. It will replace Rembrandt-R which ultimately will not be shelved right away. In fact, the latter will be demoted to the low-consumption general public category of the 2025 range.

Therefore, one cannot be sure at this point whether the Strix Halo will remain in the Ryzen 8000 series or rather the Ryzen 9000 series. AMD’s own product naming scheme suggests that it should be the second option.
