Reconstruction operations continue in the areas affected by the September 8, 2023 earthquake, while the prices of building materials continue to rise, burdening those affected.

About two weeks ago, sand prices rose again, estimated, according to professional sources in the Al Haouz region, at between 20 and 40 dirhams, while building blocks prices witnessed a new increase to reach seven dirhams.

The increases also included the construction materials transportation sector, as professionals confirmed that the price of unloading a single load of sand rose from ten dirhams to twenty dirhams in some areas.

Regarding the reasons for this new increase, they explained that “the matter is mainly related to distributors in the cities, who believe that any increase in any item should include all other items.”

They considered that “this increase, which is still ongoing, is completely unjustified,” stressing that “the situation has become very expensive for residents who want to rebuild their homes damaged by the earthquake.”

In response to the issue, Anjar Idar, head of the Ankal community in Al Haouz, said, “Prices continue to rise steadily, and the situation has become very costly for residents who have started or intend to start the reconstruction process.”

Eider explained that “activating monitoring by the competent authorities has become necessary in light of these circumstances, with a review of the support provided because it is insufficient,” according to his expression.

For their part, a number of those affected reported that the increases in the prices of building materials have burdened them, indicating that this matter requires the immediate activation of price monitoring by the relevant authorities, especially since most of them are in the process of rebuilding their homes damaged by the earthquake, or are about to do so in the coming period.
