Last week, the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo echoed the rumor that the “iPhones 15 and 15 Plus” will have cameras with 48 megapixels of resolution and sensors with CIS designContact image sensorsor contact image sensor.”>1 stacked up Now, he added to speculation that the “iPhones 16 Pro” should also count with this new component.
Kuo also recalled the possible impacts that this change should have on the market. As already mentioned, the Sony it should have a tight sensor production capacity — although much of it has already been reserved by Apple. In this way, a supplier called Will Semi should benefit from this increased demand for CIS sensors. Thus, the production of this component by the company may increase 35% this year, including considering demand from brands other than Apple.
If the rumor is confirmed, the less expensive iPhones of the next generation will be the first to receive the new feature, which, then, only later (in 2024) would be adopted by the Pro models. In addition to being a way to “test” the novelty, this might be a response to the less successful sales of the iPhones 14 and 14 Plus when compared to the 14 Pro/14 Pro Max. The “iPhone 15 Pro Max”, however, should be the only one to have a periscope lens.
As detailed by 9to5MacApple had been cautious in increasing the resolution of iPhone cameras due to the performance in low light situations, which is hampered by sensors with a lot of megapixels. However, by separating diodes and transistors into different layers, the CIS sensor is able to capture more light and remove more noise, as moving the diode to another layer allows it to be larger.
This technique of building sensors with several layers has already been adopted, for example, in the iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max, which have high-resolution cameras. Thus, low-light photography capabilities should be further improved with the new CIS design, allowing entry-level models to also feature 48MP cameras.
The new technology is already used in cameras and smartphones. Xperia 1 V, from Sony, although there are production challenges for its large-scale implementation. This difficulty may be one of the factors that explain its probable adoption in only half of the iPhone lineup, at least initially.
Anyway, this seems to be exactly the process that Apple is stimulating with the adoption of the component. Therefore, improvements can be expected precisely in terms of captures in low light situations, closed environments and with high brightness contrast.
