New identity card will be issued throughout Brazil; see what to do

2024-01-11 20:30:00

The deadline for the new National Identity Card (CIN) to be issued throughout the national territory ended on Thursday (11). To date, 23 states and the Federal District issue the document, and three Millions of Brazilians have already received the CIN.

According to the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), the new Identity Card adopts the registration number in the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF), which increases the security of Brazilians’ identification and can reduce fraud.

The 1st copy of the CIN is issued free of charge. In turn, old identity cards will have a period of ten years to be exchanged. The new document can be requested at the identification institutes in each state and the Federal District.

To issue your identity card, you must present your birth or marriage certificate in physical or digital format. If authenticity of the certificate presented is not proven, the issuing body may require other documents.

CIN in digital format

After receiving the new printed document, it is possible to access the federal government application (GOV.BR) and issue the CIN in digital format. The process is very similar to what already happens with the National Driving License (CNH).

It is worth noting that the validity of the new document will be five years, for people up to 11 years of age. For those who are between 12 full years to 59 years, the term is ten years. After 60 years, the time is indeterminate.

Blockchain

The new identity card uses blockchain technology to protect citizens’ personal data and allows secure data sharing with Civil Identification Bodies (OICs).

Another advantage of using blockchain is decentralization, as the technology is distributed across multiple machines and network nodes, reducing vulnerability to cyber attacks and making it more difficult for attackers to compromise system security.
