New Identities: Latest Changes – What Happens to Scheduling Appointments

In order to provide better and faster service, by decision of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, citizens have from today the possibility to submit supporting documents to the competent Security Services, regardless of their place of residence, as the authority to issue Identity Cards is no longer limited at the local level.

The security services of EL.AS will be responsible for serving the public. and in particular the Security Departments in the regions of the Security Directorate of Attica and Thessaloniki, as well as the Sub-Directorates and Security Departments in the rest of the country. Where there are no such Services, the identity cards will be issued by the Police Department, while in the event that it does not exist either, the responsibility is assumed by the Police Sub-Directorate based in the area in question. The goal is greater flexibility for citizens, saving time, direct service and reducing bureaucracy.

Citizens can schedule digital appointments through the id.gov.gr platform. for the issuance of a new type of identity card or its replacement due to a change in information, expiry, wear or age. Citizens enter the platform using Taxisnet codes.

It is worth noting that especially in the case of loss or theft of the Police Identity Card, the citizen should contact (by phone or e-mail) the competent Issuing Authority and request an appointment to be scheduled for the issuance of a new Identity Card.

Finally, natural persons can schedule an appointment for themselves, but also on behalf of third parties, for the issuance or replacement of a new type of identity card, except in special cases (loss, theft, damage) and through the KEPs.

Step by step the process

  • The citizen chooses in his application any Issuing Authority he wishes, regardless of his place of residence or residence, a specific day and time from the availability list, so that he can be served in person. His details are automatically drawn from the Citizens Register and the National Contact Register (EMEp). In the event that he has not updated his details in the EMEp, he should either update them on the spot or complete them by declaration.
  • He can also submit a request for an appointment with the same procedure on behalf of his minor children, aged over 12 years.
  • Upon completion of the submission of the request, he receives an e-mail with the basic information for processing the appointment, as well as the contact details of the Issuing Authority he has chosen.
  • The appointment scheduling request can be rescheduled or canceled or resubmitted no later than one (1) hour before the start of the scheduled appointment.
  • At various intervals before the start of the scheduled appointment, the interested party receives a reminder message from the platform to the e-mail they have registered.
