New highly sustainable ship for the Grimaldi group: Great Abidjan delivered to South Korea

The Grimaldi group has taken delivery of a new ship. This is the Great Abidjan, the fourth of six multipurpose ro-ro units (for rolling stock and container transport) of the G5 class, commissioned from the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan (South Korea). And the christening and delivery ceremony of the new ship took place at the South Korean shipyard on 23 April 2024.

250 meters long, 38 meters wide and with a deadweight capacity of 45,684 tonnes, «the design of the Great Abidjan and its twins – explain the Grimaldi technicians – is the result of a study of the needs of the group and those of its customers: thank you with an innovative and completely customized internal configuration, the G5 class ships can transport 4,700 linear meters of rolling goods, 2,500 ceu (car equivalent unit) and 2 thousand TEUs (unit of measurement equal to a 20-foot container)”. Compared to the previous G4 class, the new units have an unchanged rolling capacity, while that for containers has doubled.

Cutting-edge sustainability on board

In addition to its load capacity, the technicians continue, «the Great Abidjan stands out for its numerous cutting-edge technological solutions, aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. In fact, the Great Abidjan is capable of reducing CO2 emissions, per ton transported, by up to 43%, compared to other multipurpose con-ro ships in the Grimaldi fleet.

The event was attended, among others, by Diego Pacella, president of Grimaldi Deep Sea and Hyung Kwan Kim and Eui Sung Yoon, respectively president and executive vice president of the construction site. Godmother of the ship, the Italian ambassador to Seoul, Emilia Gatto, who took the opportunity to reiterate the importance of commercial relations between Italy and South Korea, underlining that the two companies provide an excellent example of collaboration between the two countries.

Long collaboration with Korea

«The Greater Abidjan – said Pacella – is the result of a long and fruitful collaboration with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which might continue in the future, for the renewal of our fleet. The ship, which takes the name of a port served by our group for years, will soon be used, like its triplets already operational, on our long-range connections between Northern Europe and West Africa”, he concluded.
