New Fire Protection Measures in Italian Railway Tunnels: Deadline Extension and Impact on Train Services

2023-12-31 22:02:30

Italian authorities have extended by one year the deadline for implementing new fire protection measures required for railway tunnels.

A corresponding authorization from the Italian Ministry of Rail Safety reached the SBB on Sunday followingnoon, a SBB spokesperson told the Keystone-ATS agency. The deadline for implementing the fire protection measures required by the Italian authorities has been extended until December 31, 2024.

However, trains between Haut-Valais and Domodossola will not yet run normally from January 1, the spokesperson said. Some delay is necessary, but full service will be restored as quickly as possible, probably within the next week.

38 trains canceled

On Friday, SBB announced that 38 weekly Intercity and Interregio train connections between Domodossola and Brig were to be temporarily canceled from January 1, 2024 due to the lack of authorization from Italy.

This situation was due to a new fire protection provision from the Italian Ministry of Transport for crossing tunnels of a certain length. Until now, the affected trains – Domino and VU IV – were exempt from this directive.
