After less than two years of construction, the time has come: the two film production halls at 7. Haidequerstrasse 6 in Vienna’s eleventh district are going into operation.
The Hafen Wien, a Wien Holding company, and HQ7 Studios, a CC Real International and 3MPG company, jointly realized two sound stages planned according to international standards at the HQ7 operating location. City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke, Wien Holding managing director Kurt Gollowitzer, Hafen Wien managing directors Fritz Lehr and Doris Pulker-Rohrhofer as well as Anu Shanker, Managing Director HQ7 Studios GmbH, are now officially handing over the two studios.
Films used to be produced in Vienna in the Rosenhügel film studios, but around ten years ago they were closed and gradually demolished. This created a gap in the domestic film industry. Over the past ten years, empty industrial and warehouse buildings in the Vienna area have often been temporarily and elaborately converted into “studios” as alternative accommodation. That should now change and through the construction of the HQ7 studios, international productions can also be brought back to Vienna.
International filming is important for tourism and the film industry
“International filming is of central importance for Vienna’s tourism and film industry. Through the Vienna Film Incentive, launched in March 2022, we are already providing an incentive to get international filmmakers excited about Vienna and to bring the many different facets of the city to screens worldwide. With the opening of the new HQ7 studios, this measure is now optimally supplemented and enhanced. Vienna as a filming location not only means orders for the local economy, local expenses for overnight stays or food for the film crews, but also contributes to the tourist attractiveness of the city in the long term,” says City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke happily.
“Vienna has always been an attractive filming location with a national and international flair. With the new film studios in the Port of Vienna, we are strengthening Vienna’s position as a leading location for the creative industries. Every production that is created here brings economic orders, creates jobs and raises Vienna as a business location to a new level. In the tough international competition for creative and cultural productions, Vienna has the potential to assert itself as an important hub that promotes innovation, creativity and economic dynamism in equal measure,” emphasizes NEOS Vienna business spokesman Markus Ornig.
“The film industry has been an integral part of the Port of Vienna for a long time. In 2023, sixteen film and series or studio projects were realized on the HQ7 industrial site, including scenes from Tatort and Schnell identified. With the construction of the two new studios, we can offer national and international productions a new, professional environment that can compete with Hollywood studios. With an investment of nine million euros, the Port of Vienna is expanding its HQ7 operating location to include two huge, modern film halls, thus continuing the HQ7 success story,” says Kurt Gollowitzer, Managing Director of Wien Holding.
HQ7 Studios: it couldn’t be more modern
The name HQ7 Studios is derived from the address: A building with two halls stands on the site of 7. Haidequerstrasse 6: The two studios have a considerable total area of around 3,000 square meters and are specifically planned and designed as “soundproofed”. . There are two independent halls, Studio 1 with around 2,000 m2 exclusive service zone, Studio 2 with around 1,000 m2 exclusive service zone. Both halls are equipped so that two productions can be realized independently of each other at the same time. There are no comparable opportunities for film productions to be found in Austria. The inner light of the halls is 13 meters. The greatest possible flexibility for users is ensured by a load-bearing ceiling construction for e.g. B. Rigging (=hooking, hanging) of various technology and props etc. guaranteed. Accessibility via stairs and service walkways (under the roof) is possible.
Both halls are completely empty and designed for heavy weight: the roof racks can together carry up to 180 tons. Everything is barrier-free, trucks can fit through the two main gates and drive directly into the halls with the film equipment, and the entrance gates are designed as sound locks. The comprehensive underfloor heating completes the modern equipment and is unique in Europe.
Everything has also been thought of when it comes to sustainability. The HQ7 Studios are built to save energy and are equipped with a huge photovoltaic system. The film halls are supplied with green electricity with more than 704 solar panels. An annual production of a total of 283,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) is expected, which means a CO2 saving of 80,000 kg per year.
The two internationally competitive Industry Standard Stages were built by the Port of Vienna according to the plans of the operator HQ7 Studios GmbH, a subsidiary of CC Real International based in Vienna and 3MPG based in Switzerland. The owner is the Port of Vienna and the operator is HQ7 Studios GmbH.
Pathology and hospital included
Directly next to the studios there are two fixed sets available for productions: a hospital set with props directly from the former Floridsdorf hospital and a faithfully recreated film pathology that is built and operated by Jori-Studios.
Production offices can also be rented in the adjacent HQ7 commercial complex right next to the halls. It is possible to rent rooms for costumes, make-up, workshops, studios and storage in order to be able to accompany the entire course of a film project in national and international productions. This ideal infrastructure combination forms the basis for work at the highest level.
“With the operation of the HQ7 Studios, national and international productions will now have a professional environment. The combination of incentives (FISA+, Vienna Film Incentive), well-trained crews and now also the studios will make it even easier for producers from home and abroad to film in Vienna. The work of local service providers in prop construction, equipment and costume rental, etc. is also highly valued worldwide,” says Anu Shanker, Managing Director HQ7 Studios.
outlook
For 2025, the operators see a nice mix of international, but also Austrian, feature films and series coming their way. Most productions will be from Germany, but the British market is also just getting started.
Successful operating location HQ7
“In 2017, the Port of Vienna acquired a six-hectare property on 7th Haidequerstrasse. The area, known as HQ7, covers an area the size of eight football fields and houses offices, workshops, warehouses, garages and parking spaces. The convenient location is increasingly attracting companies from the commercial and manufacturing sectors who want to work and produce close to the city center. The diversity of the local production and service companies underlines the complexity of the Hafen Wien logistics center. With the construction of two film halls on the HQ7 area, the location will be further upgraded, which will strengthen our competitiveness,” explained the managing directors of the Port of Vienna, Fritz Lehr and Doris Pulker-Rohrhofer, in unison.
The Port of Vienna – trimodal logistics center in the heart of the city
