Sports Writing Aug 29 (EFE).- The New England Patriots surprised this Tuesday by releasing Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham to keep Mac Jones as the only quarterback on the team, on the deadline that the NFL gives to the 32 franchises to define the 53 members who will play the 2023 season.

Last year Zappe had a consistent season. He also put in strong performances in all three games this preseason, which seemed like enough to open up a spot on the team he was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft, but he didn’t make the cut.

Cunningham, a quarterback who can play multiple positions, was active in two warm-up games. He showed composure to find his receivers and ability to get out of the pocket, but it was not enough to convince Bill Belichick, coach of the Patriots.

In the champion Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Blaine Gabbert won the race to be the backup to Patrick Mahomes. Shane Buechele was the quarterback released.

In the case of defensive end Chris Jones, star in the Monarchs, he was reported on the disabled list and will miss at least the first four weeks of the season.

In Buffalo, he highlighted the inclusion of cornerback Damar Hamlin in the final list of the Bills for this season following recovering from cardiac arrest he suffered last January in a regular season game.

Hamlin, who was in intensive care for a week, was released to return to training a couple of months following the incident. He participated in the summer camp with his team and in the games this preseason he showed that he is ready to play.

In the Dallas Cowboys running back Malik Davis was cut. Rookie Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle remain as backups to star Tony Pollard.

Also this Tuesday the New Orleans Saints confirmed that receiver Jimmy Graham will play this season. Graham, who takes medication to prevent seizures, was arrested a week ago following he failed to take his medication and officers thought he was wandering under the influence of a banned substance.

Jimmy is 36 years old and will play his 13th season in the NFL, in which he has been, in addition to New Orleans, in Seattle, Green Bay and Chicago.

In San Francisco, the 49ers are still waiting to reach an agreement for the salary increase requested by Nick Bosa, one of the best defensive players in the NFL.
