Under a regulation by the interior minister, 137 municipal offices can register Austrians’ photos for electronic cards. 109 cities can also register foreigners. Interior Minister Gerhard Kana emphasized: “Community is a service for the Austrian people. The function of taking photos of electronic cards in municipal offices is a step forward.
Provide citizens with shorter routes
The possibility of uploading the image of the electronic card directly to the municipal office and officially confirming it shortens the distance between people. For example, 24-hour paramedics from Romania can now go to the nearest municipal office for photo registration instead of having to go to the state police headquarters or the federal immigration and asylum office in the state capital. “This is an important service, especially for those who have to travel long distances. Austrian municipalities are happy to be partners in providing even more services to their citizens,” emphasizes Johannes Pressl, President of the Association of Municipalities. “We look forward to seeing more cities offering electronic card services in the future.”
Following a call from the Ministry of Interior and Municipal Associations, participating communities voluntarily accepted the new service. Other communities may be added in the future.
status quo
As of 2020, e-cards in Austria include a photo of the holder. To date, images used for this purpose have mainly come from driving license registers and other state registers. However, not all Austrians were recorded, and foreigners were often not taken into account. Therefore, Austrians must contact the social insurance company for photo registration, while non-Austrian citizens must contact the state police or the Federal Office for Migration and Asylum.
