On Sunday, the Egyptian House of Representatives approved the draft law submitted by the government amending some provisions of Law No. 97 of 1959 regarding passports.
Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported that the draft law requires increasing passport fees from 250 pounds to 1,000 pounds.
The amendments to the provisions of Law No. 97 of 1959, in the text of the first paragraph, Article (8), were as follows:
- The form of the passport is determined by a decision from the Minister of the Interior following the approval of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as determining its validity period and specifications, and the amount of the fee collected for it, not to exceed 1,000 pounds, in addition to the fees prescribed by other laws.
Regarding the goal of this, Al-Masry Al-Youm quoted Representative Ahmed Saleh, a member of the Defense and National Security Committee in the House of Representatives, as saying during the presentation of the committee’s report on the draft amendment to the passport law, that amending the law aims to achieve financial protection for the state’s budget, by reducing losses. resulting from fluctuations in exchange rates to issue the passport electronically in accordance with new global standards and the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization while providing better security and greater effectiveness in combating passport counterfeiting.
He added, “The amendment to the fees for obtaining a passport came in light of the commitments to international charters and agreements that specify the methods of securing travel documents and what this requires of making periodic amendments to the passport insurance marks to achieve more guarantees.”
Regarding the date of implementing this increase, the “Sada El Balad” website revealed that there are two remaining steps, which are the approval and ratification of the President of the Republic and the publication of the decision in the Official Gazette.
