New earthquakes: three dead in Turkey, five victims in Syria

According to official figures, 213 people were injured in Turkey and taken to hospitals. Panic also broke out in Syria.

Two weeks following a devastating earthquake in south-eastern Turkey, further earthquakes measuring 6.4 and 5.8 have shaken the region. The epicenter was in Samandag district of Hatay province. According to official figures, at least three people were killed in Turkey and 213 others were injured and taken to hospitals.

The broadcaster “CNN Türk” reported that people had run out into the streets in panic and that there was also a power failure in Hatay. The mayor of Hatay, Lütfü Savas, warned that the earthquakes were continuing keep away from collapsing buildings.

According to the White Helmets aid organization, more than 150 people were injured in northern Syria, and several damaged houses collapsed. Syrian activists also reported five dead Tuesday morning. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, residents in the towns of Aleppo, Tartus and Hama panicked and jumped from their houses.

Early in the morning of February 6, a 7.7-magnitude tremor shook southeast Turkey and northern Syria, followed hours later by a second severe 7.6-magnitude tremor. In both cases, the epicenter was in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaras. More than 47,000 people have died so far.
