As the draft surfaced, there was a mixed reaction from Chinese consumers.

According to foreign media reports, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs renamed the draft “Family-Friendly Society” after public backlash.

Comments on this draft can be submitted to the Ministry by September 11.

It should be remembered that this draft was brought by the government, when the population rate in China has been decreasing continuously for the past two years, the policy makers have also urged young people to get married.

Previously, Chinese law restricted marriages to be performed only at a local registration center, but the new draft has removed this restriction as well.

In the new draft, a couple who wants to divorce will be given a 30-day “cooling off period”. If either the wife or the husband does not want to get a divorce, or withdraws his/her petition or requests to cancel the divorce registration process within this specified period, all the cases will be considered in this cooling parade.

According to Professor Jiang Quanbao of the Institute of Population and Development Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong University, the purpose of this draft is to highlight the importance of marriage and family and to reduce the increasing divorce rate in the country.

The number of couples tying the knot in China has dropped significantly since 2013. This year, only 498,000 Chinese couples are married, which is significantly less than last year’s 3.43 million.

The report also states that the trend of marriage among Chinese youth has declined. Now most of the young people prefer to stay single for marriage. According to them, marriage can create difficulties in their future path and job security.
