New district for 11,000 people

Donaustadt is growing the fastest of all Vienna districts. Seestadt Aspern was responsible for this for a long time, but now new urban development areas are constantly being added. The construction project “Am Heidjöchl” was presented to the residents on Monday.

11,000 new residents are to find a home in the “Am Heidjöchl” urban development area. On Monday evening, the plans for the 35-hectare urban development area were presented to the residents of the area. They reacted with mixed feelings. “We were among the first to arrive and that was actually the reason we moved here. We wanted our peace and quiet,” says a resident at the information evening.

Numerous areas along the U2

“Am Heidjöchl” is just one of many new residential areas along the U2, says Christoph Hrncir, head of the department for district planning and zoning in north-eastern Vienna. “We have Seestadt, then Heidjöchl. Then, in the wider area, we have Berresgasse and where the U2 then turns south once more, we drive through Hausfeld, where part of the urban development is already planned, but there is still further potential. Then, as a sort of conclusion to this axis, is the Erzherzog-Karl-Strasse, which we have had in urban development for a number of years.”

The U2 is the connecting element of these new districts. The city street then runs “Am Heidjöchl”. At Hausfeld you can currently see how the tunnel portal is being built. According to the city planners, this infrastructure must first be built before apartments come here. Subsidized apartments are to be built primarily. “We speak of classic two-thirds subsidized housing, which is now standard in Vienna. Of course there will also be green spaces. There will be a park that will be regarding the same size as the Volksgarten, i.e. almost five hectares.”

On Monday, the residents of Donaustadt found out where the next urban development area is to be built. 11,000 people should find a new home “Am Heidjöchl”.

hope on

At the information evening there were also some who are looking forward to improvements. “We are urgently waiting for the 27 tram line because the 26 line is hopelessly overloaded.” It will also take a few more years for the development area to be implemented. The call for tenders for the competition is currently in progress. What the new urban development area “Am Heidjöchl” will look like is still completely open. Construction might start as early as 2028.
