Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have discovered a group of nerve cells in the brains of mice involved in creating negative emotions and chronic stress.

Previously, science did not know exactly which cells in the brain cause these conditions. Through the experiments, the scientists used four cutting-edge techniques, including optogenetics, and were able to identify a specific neural pathway that controls disgust, which runs from the hypothalamus to a node in the brains of mice.

Activating this pathway caused the mice to avoid a particular room in the maze, even if the neurons were not refired. The results of the study are published in the journal Nature Neuroscience. Konstantinos Meletis, professor in the Department of Neurology at the Karolinska Institute, notes that understanding how negative signals are created in the brain will help develop new drugs to treat mood disorders, including depression.
