Major airlines are substantially increasing their presence across the Atlantic, offering travelers an abundance of options and potentially more affordable fares. According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, a whopping 35 new routes are taking flight this summer, adding a remarkable 7,000 seats per day compared to the same period in 2024. What’s even more impressive is this represents a 10 percent increase over pre-pandemic levels in 2019. that translates to a staggering 1.4 million additional seats available for travelers from June through August.
“It’s a golden opportunity for Americans wanting to get to Europe, and inexpensively, where fares are concerned,” shares Mike Arnot, a spokesperson for Cirium.
Adding fuel to the fire, the dollar and euro are currently almost at par, giving U.S. travelers even more spending power once they land.
Italy is the clear winner when it comes to airlift growth, wiht 14 new routes from the United States arriving this year. This surge is highly likely driven by the highly anticipated 2025 Jubilee, a Catholic tradition that occurs only every 25 years and is expected to draw massive crowds. The Jubilee celebrations will continue through early 2026. Delta Air Lines is poised to benefit significantly from this trend, as four out of its seven new European routes this year are headed to Italy. They’ve even cemented their position as the largest U.S. carrier in the Italian market.
united Airlines is hot on Delta’s heels, adding five European airports in what the airline claims is its biggest international expansion ever. But don’t expect the usual fare – United is also launching a unique twice-weekly flight from Newark Liberty international Airport to Nuuk, Greenland, starting June 14.
American Airlines is taking a different approach, introducing new routes from smaller airports outside their major hubs in New York and Dallas. Expect a new nonstop flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to Athens starting June 5.
Even European carriers are joining the expansion party, with Aer Lingus launching service connecting Dublin to Nashville and Indianapolis, two cities that have traditionally lacked direct flights to Europe. TAP Air Portugal is also adding three new U.S. flights,including a weekly nonstop from San Francisco to the Azores archipelago.
