New Design of 1000 and 5000 Ruble Banknotes: Bank of Russia’s Latest Release

At the presentation, the Bank of Russia showed a new design of banknotes in denominations of 1,000 and 5,000 rubles. They are now made in the style that was previously used in banknotes of 100, 200 and 2000 rubles. The presentation was broadcast on the Central Bank VKontakte group.

The 1000 ruble banknote is now dedicated to the Volga Federal District: on the front side are the sights of Nizhny Novgorod, on the back – the Volga River and the Zhiguli Mountains, the sights of Kazan and Ufa.

The banknote with a denomination of 5000 rubles depicts the Ural Federal District: on the front side there are buildings and monuments of Yekaterinburg, on the reverse side there is the monument “Tale of the Urals” in Chelyabinsk, the stele “66 parallel” (Arctic Circle) in Salekhard and an image of the Ural industrial enterprise.

The new banknotes retain their familiar colors. The 1000 ruble banknote is made in turquoise shades, the 5000 ruble banknote is red-orange. A QR code was placed at the bottom of the front side of the banknotes, which leads to the Central Bank website with a description of the artistic design and security features of the banknotes. They are made on white cotton paper. Two types of protective fibers were introduced into it: colored with alternating sections of red and blue, and gray fibers. On the front side of the banknote, four fragments of a diving holographic security thread also appear on the surface.

1000 ruble banknote for the last time was updated in August 2010. It depicted the sights of Yaroslavl. 5000 ruble banknote came in put into circulation in September 2011. It depicted views and monuments of Khabarovsk. The new design of banknotes first appeared in 2017 with the introduction of banknotes in denomination 200 rubles (Crimea is depicted) and 2000 rubles (Far East). In 2022 in a new style completed banknote of 100 rubles (Moscow and Central Federal District). The design of the denomination banknotes remains unchanged for now 50 rubles (St. Petersburg) and 500 rubles (Arkhangelsk).

Banknotes issued in 2023 are a legal means of cash payment in Russia and are required to be accepted at face value when paying for any types of goods and services without any restrictions, noted Central Bank. New banknotes will be gradually introduced into circulation, and old ones will be withdrawn from it as they wear out. For some time, banknotes of the old and new designs will be in circulation simultaneously and will be equally legal, Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergei Belov noted at the presentation.
