India’s meteorological service has warned of a “severe heat wave” this week. Yesterday in Nazafgarh, a suburb of New Delhi, the thermometer showed 47.8 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in the entire country.

Schools closed in New Delhi

The authorities of several states, including Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab – in the north and central India–, have also called for schools to be closed, according to Indian Today.

In May 2022, some parts of New Delhi recorded temperatures that reached 49.2 degrees Celsius.

In contrast, southern India, mainly the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, have been hit by heavy rains in recent days. Strong storms also hit parts of the country last week, most notably the financial capital Mumbai, where strong winds toppled a billboard, killing 16 people and injuring dozens.

In April, an extreme heat wave was recorded in South and Southeast Asia, mainly the Philippines and Bangladesh, where thousands of schools suspended classes for the duration. According to scientists, heat waves are longer, more frequent and more intense due to climate change.

Moreover, during this period 968 million Indians are invited to elect the 543 members of the lower house. The sixth phase of the general elections, out of seven that will last until June 1, will begin on Saturday, including in New Delhi.

According to iefimerida, India’s Election Commission announced in April that it has set up a working committee to look into the effects of heat and humidity at every stage of the election process.

Voter turnout was lower than in 2019, with some analysts attributing the event to the extreme heat and others to “some indifference” by voters in a contest in which no surprises are expected. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is running for a third term, is expected to be re-elected.
