The bicycle boom in Vienna is unabated: According to the Austrian Traffic Club (VCÖ), a new record was set in the federal capital in the first half of the year. According to the VCÖ, a total of 5.62 million cyclists were out and regarding at all cycle counting stations. That was more than ever. The value from the first half of 2022 was exceeded by 49,000 – although according to statistics it rained five days more this year than in the same period last year.

There are now a total of 18 automatic bicycle traffic counting stations in the city. By 2022 there were 13. But even if only those stations are considered that have been in operation for a long time, according to the VCÖ a top value can be reported. Most bikers this year have been registered in Operngasse with 623,700. The other places are followed by the facilities at Praterstern (595,300), on Argentinierstraße (543,900) and Lassallestraße (532,600). The busiest month for cycling was June with 1.58 million counts, ahead of May with 1.36 million and March with 856,000.

“This development is gratifying. Anyone who uses the bicycle as a means of transport is climate-friendly and inexpensive to get around and thus also gets a regular portion of healthy exercise. Anyone who rides a bicycle instead of sitting in the car also relieves the roads, helps to reduce traffic jams and reduces exhaust emissions,” emphasized Lina Mosshammer from the VCÖ.

The experiences of the past few years would show that July and August are also very busy months for cyclists, while car traffic in the city decreases in summer. “During the summer months, motor vehicle traffic requires less space, both for driving and for parking. Space that can be used temporarily for bicycle traffic wherever possible. This increases safety for cycling in the districts,” she spoke out in favor of appropriate measures. It is important, for example, that cycle paths are available with sufficient width.
