New Cycle Tunnel Under Brussels Ring Road Enhances Safety and Accessibility for Cyclists in Overijse

A cycle tunnel passing under the Brussels ring road was officially opened in Overijse on Wednesday, said the Flemish public law company De Werkvenootschap. The tunnel connects the end of the Welriekendedreef to the Sonian Forest cycle network.

Until now, a pedestrian tunnel was at the end of the Welriekendedreef. Cyclists were then forced to get off their bike and roll it down a gutter along a flight of stairs. Thanks to the construction of the cycle tunnel, which cost 2.6 million euros, this is no longer necessary.

“The transformation of this former pedestrian tunnel into a comfortable cycle tunnel is part of the ‘Werken aan de Ring’ programme”, explained the Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld). “The question of removing the barrier formed by the Brussels ring road between residential areas and nature was central, as was improving the safety of cyclists. This cycle tunnel combines both ambitions.”
