New CT device with even better imaging in use at the Wels Clinic

The radiology department at the Welser Klinikum has recently started working with an innovative photon counting CT device that delivers images of the human body in unprecedentedly high quality. The pioneering technology brings particular advantages in the diagnosis of heart and vascular diseases. There were only two devices of this type in the whole of Austria, in Vienna and Graz.

“Unlike before, patients with severe calcification of the coronary arteries can now also be examined using CT. In addition, advantages in tumor diagnostics and lung diagnostics can be expected,” says René Müller-Wille, head of the Institute of Radiology at the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic. The high resolution also enables, for example, an improved representation of the auditory ossicles in the petrous bone. Certain examinations can also be carried out with a lower radiation dose and less contrast material.

The joy about the new device is great, but it also brings challenges. The new technology creates a multiple of the usual amount of data that has to be processed, diagnosed and of course also stored.
