Charlotte. – The new head of public schools in the Charlotte area has been named.
With the imminent departure of interim superintendent Hugg Hattabaugh, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education has determined that Dr. Crystal Hill, the district’s current chief of staff, will serve as interim superintendent.
Hill will lead CMS during the search for a permanent superintendent.
21 thousand dollars monthly
The educator will start operating on January 1, 2023 and her salary will be more than $21,000 per month.
“Serving as interim superintendent is a responsibility I do not take lightly or for granted. It is often said ‘to whom much is given, much is required’, and in this role, I remain committed to making the best decisions on behalf of our students, their families, staff and this entire community,” Hill said.
The curriculum
Hill has been the CMS Chief of Staff since May 2022, serving as the top advisor to the superintendent, and serving as the liaison between the Board of Education and district executive staff.
Prior to joining CMS, she was the Chief Academic Officer of Cabarrus County Schools, where she led the district to its highest level of academic achievement in its history.
He has 25 years of experience in the education sector.
She began her career as a first grade teacher in Guilford County Schools.
Subsequently, she served in various positions, including Assistant Principal, Director, and Executive Director of Elementary Education and Federal Programs in the Mooresville School District.
She was the Curriculum Coordinator in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools; and Director of Personnel at Cabarrus.
She currently serves on the Leading on Opportunity Board of Directors and, in 2020, co-chaired the North Carolina State Board of Education Task Force on Literacy.
Education
Hill earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational technology, both from North Carolina A&T State University. She also earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Gardner-Webb University.
