Last year was a busy period for Chevrolet in Peru, as the brand expanded its pick-up offering with the introduction of the Silverado and Montana. Instead, in 2024 it begins with the launch of the third generation of the Sail. El Comercio was at its presentation event where it spoke with the brand’s spokespersons, who told us in detail regarding this vehicle.
The main novelties of this new Sail is that it has larger dimensions, while at the same time improving its safety equipment.
In general terms, the third generation of the Sail looks rejuvenated. This update to its silhouette suits it very well, since it retained the design of the second generation that appeared in 2015. That is, it had been on the market for almost 10 years and looked aged compared to its rivals such as the Kia Soluto or Nissan Versa.
In reality, the new Sail maintains some features of the outgoing generation, but at the same time we are looking at a 19 cm longer body. In this sense, it no longer looks as compact or small as before. On the other hand, to a certain extent, it adopts the new design trend with straighter lines, leaving behind round or oval designs. This can be easily noticed if we compare both generations.
Specifically, these are its new measurements: 4,490 mm long, 1,695 mm wide and 1,490 mm high. Likewise, it has a wheelbase of 2,550 mm and a trunk capacity of 475 liters.
Regarding the front view, we find a new grille design, which is divided in two by a chrome frame with the Chevrolet logo in the center. The bumper also looks different, as the lower air intakes further accentuate its trapezoidal design. Likewise, the design of the main lights and fog lights adopts this style with straighter angles in their corners.
Seen from the side, for a moment it reminds us of the style of that first generation Chevrolet Cruze (2012-2016) that attracted attention for its sporty silhouette. This Sail now has a similar length, although with a smaller volume. From this view, its new wheelbase and the straight silhouette of the rear area look much better. Here we find the exterior rearview mirrors in the color of the body, which are electric and with turn signal light, as well as tires measuring 185/60R15 in both available versions. For the full version (LTZ), a shark antenna and 15″ alloy rings are added. The entry version (LT) comes with 15″ steel hoops with covers.

Seen from the back, a more modern silhouette is observed. The design of the rear lights is more elongated and includes exhaust outlets that are beautifying. On the other hand, the trunk capacity improved by 100 liters and we now have 475 liters in this compact. Although this figure for the Sail is without considering the free installation of the LPG or CNG KIT, which might take up a little space in the trunk if the tank is not toroidal.
Motorization
The new Sail maintains its naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which now generates 98 hp at 5,800 rpm and 143 nm of torque between 3,400 and 4,400 rpm. We say now because the previous generation achieved 109 hp and 141 nm of torque; that is, there was a decrease of 11 hp and a gain of 2 nm. “This is because the new Sail has been adapted to Euro 6 regulations. If there is an emissions adjustment, there is also an adjustment in hp, although there is also a calibration to improve efficiency,” indicated the Product Manager of General Motors, Carlos Pedraza.
As is known, the Euro 6 standards were going to come into force from October 2024; However, the Peruvian government decided to postpone this date to 2025. The standard obliges vehicle manufacturers to reduce emissions of polluting gases and to do so they install filters that, at the same time, have an impact on the power of the vehicle. In that sense, the Chevrolet Sail is already prepared for the new regulation, while remaining efficient.

According to Pedraza, the vehicle has already been tested in Chile and has achieved an average consumption of 65 km/g, which is a very good figure for its segment. In this sense, it is expected that this vehicle can achieve a similar result in Peru, since the vehicle is aimed at an entrepreneurial public. Although, in any case, since it is bifuel (LPG or CNG), the efficiency forecast is more than positive.
Likewise, the new Sail adds one more gear to its manual transmission box. In such a way that there are no longer 5, but 6 changes that it has, which affects its operation and consumption. By having a greater number of gears, the relationship and rpm ranges are improved, causing lower consumption.
On the other hand, and without any major news, the suspension continues with the classic suspension scheme in this segment. That is, independent McPherson suspension at the front and torsion axle at the rear axle. The big novelty is found in the braking system, since the current generation includes disc brakes on all four wheels, which is a superior scheme compared to its competitors.
Technology and security
On the outside, it has a remote trunk opening, rear window defroster, halogen headlights with integrated projector, fog lights (LTZ version), variable speed front windshield wiper, DLR LED daytime running light, among others.
As for the interior, it includes manual air conditioning, electric windows with “one touch” function on the pilot, front seats adjustable in depth and inclination, cloth seats, folding rear seats (100% in LT and 60/40 in LTZ), central locking with remote control integrated into the key, radio controls on the steering wheel, 3.5″ information screen, AM/FM radio and Bluetooth cluster (LT version), 8″ touchscreen radio with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (LTZ version), and more.

Finally, in terms of safety, it integrates six airbags, alarm, height-adjustable headrests, HSA hill start assist, three-point seat belts and stability control. Additionally, the most equipped version adds a reversing camera.
Price and colors
It is available in metallic red, metallic silver, polar white, platinum light blue and metallic steel gray. Likewise, its base price is US$13,990 in the LT version, while the LTZ version comes in at US$14,990.
