Diesel cars, on the other hand, saw a decline of 19.7 percent. They sold even worse than pure electric cars, which sold 11.7 percent. Overall, 7.6 percent more new cars were sold in July, making a total of 18,901 cars. Taking all motor vehicles together, the increase was 3.6 percent; a total of 29,393 vehicles were newly registered in July 2024 compared to July 2023. The big loser here was mobile homes, with a decline of 36.2 percent. However, they sold like hotcakes during the Corona pandemic. The weakening economy has been reflected in freight carriers’ willingness to buy, with semi-trailer trucks down 16.4 percent.
According to Statistics Austria, 154,014 passenger cars were registered for the first time between January and July this year. This represents an increase of 6.8 percent compared to the same period last year. More than two thirds were registered by companies. A total of 226,487 vehicles were newly registered up to July this year, an increase of 7.1 percent.
“In particular, registrations of new cars with petrol hybrid drives have increased by a fifth compared to the first seven months of the previous year and have reached a share of almost a quarter of all newly registered cars. With more than a third of all new car registrations, only pure petrol cars had a higher share,” said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas in a press release on Friday.
From January to July 2024, 52,783 petrol cars (plus 8.8 percent) and 29,687 diesel cars (plus 2.2 percent) were newly registered. In total, conventionally powered cars had 82,470 new registrations (6.3 percent increase) and a market share of 53.5 percent. Alternative-powered cars achieved a share of 46.5 percent (71,544 units), an increase of 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year. 37,743 petrol hybrids (plus 20.6 percent) and 8,677 diesel hybrids (minus 0.2 percent) were newly registered. Electric cars, with 25,111 cars, remained 5.9 percent behind the value for the period January to July 2023.
Volkswagen’s most important brand
The most important car brands were VW (share: 15.2 percent), Skoda (9.2 percent) and BMW (7.2 percent). Of the ten car brands with the largest market shares, Dacia recorded the highest growth with an increase of 24.7 percent. There were fewer new car registrations at Tesla (minus 10.9 percent).
Since the beginning of the year, the commercial vehicle market has seen an increase of 25.6 percent for vehicles in class N1 – the delivery vans with a maximum permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes that are popular with delivery services. However, there has been a decrease of 1.8 percent for semitrailer tractors used in transit. In the two-wheeler segment, 2.9 percent more motorized bicycles were newly registered up to July, but fewer motorcycles (minus 0.8 percent). The increase for tractors was 0.9 percent.
