New Bug In Windows 11 Version 22H2 Breaks Remote Desktop Connections, Microsoft Says

Microsoft has once more acknowledged another problem which affects users who have upgraded to the latest Windows 11 update. The company further clarifies that if you try to use the Windows Remote Desktop application to connect to another PC, you may experience freezes or crashes.

“After installing Windows 11, version 22H2 (also known as Windows 11 2022 Update), the Windows Remote Desktop app may become unresponsive when connecting through a Remote Desktop Gateway or Remote Desktop Connection Broker. An example of this login scenario is when connecting to a Remote Desktop Services Collection. Connexions RemoteApp et Desktop are means by which this connection is made,” Microsoft says via the Windows 11 Health Dashboard.

However, if you are a home user, you are less likely to encounter this problem. This is mainly because the connection problem is different by default.

Microsoft has identified the issue that may occur when you are at the “Loading Virtual Machine” or “Setting Up Remote Connection” step when trying to connect to a virtual machine. The company further pointed out that the problem is likely to affect you regardless of the version of the operating system installed. Also, in some cases, if the Remote Desktop application is not responding, the error message “Your Remote Desktop Services session has ended” may appear.

In such a case, Microsoft recommends terminating it using Windows Task Manager as a workaround. Additionally, the company added that affected parties can resolve the issue by configuring a special group policy as follows:

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Console (for managed enterprise devices) or Group Policy Editor (for unmanaged home devices)
  2. In the right pane, navigate to Setting up a computer > Administrative Templates > Composants Windows > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client
  3. Find a policy called Disable UDP on the client and set it to Enabled
  4. Click on OKAY and restart the device to apply the changes

This should fix the issue, although performance is significantly impacted when using the Remote Desktop app over the WAN. Microsoft further added that affected users should use it in the meantime while it works on a fix. at this point you should consider restoring the original policy settings.

That said, in October, Microsoft announced that it had started rolling out Windows 11 version 22H2, which had tons of improvements as well as features. Soon following, several users filed complaints that they were having issues with their printer drivers following installing the update.

In turn, the company suspended compatibility of Windows devices with the affected printer drivers, preventing them from upgrading to Windows 11 2022 Update. However, Microsoft has since resolved the issue and lifted the suspension allowing anyone to upgrade his PC.

Additionally, the company recently announced that Windows 10 22H2 is ready for an extended rollout. This announcement comes a few weeks before the 21H1 version of Windows 10 reaches its end of support date which should be on December 13th.
