The new book “Der Neusiedler See. A cross-border crosser through the ages” deals with how the water industry looks at Lake Neusiedl. Author Brigitte Krizsanits talks regarding the people in the region, the history of the lake, which is characterized by water level fluctuations, and the efforts of the state of Burgenland to preserve it in the long term. Photographer Birgit Machtinger provides the images.

The state’s main water management department acts as editor and wanted to put its perspective on the lake and the measures and strategies for its preservation – keyword supply – on paper. “It’s regarding making the lake system understandable to a broad audience,” emphasized department head Karl Maracek at the presentation of the book. One focus is on the planned water supply, with which the state wants to preserve the lake as a natural element.

Krizsanits ranges from the creation of Lake Neusiedl to long-forgotten economic sectors such as the export of leeches to the drought and low water levels of recent years. The whole thing is accompanied by pictures of fishing, the cleaning up of the storks’ nests in Rust and a reed cutting machine.

The outlook at the end of the book is provided by the responsible state councilor Heinrich Dorner (SPÖ), who reported on intensive years surrounding the planned supply line and other measures to preserve the lake. “It’s unbelievable how happy you can be with a few centimeters more water level,” said Dorner. The lake is an emotional topic for many – including state governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), “because he wants the solution tomorrow and not the day following tomorrow,” said the state councilor.

According to Christian Sailer, head of the “Task Force Neusiedler See”, work on the book lasted over three years. It was published by “edition lex liszt 12” by Horst Horvath from southern Burgenland.
