A Apple today released the second beta versions of iOS 17.1, iPadOS 17.1, macOS 14.1, watchOS 10.1 and tvOS 17.1 — and they gained some new features compared to the first ones, which were made available last week.
This time, we had changes in almost all of the company’s operating systems — even in visionOS, whose fourth beta was made available and brought the Notes app to the OS for the first time!
Let’s check out the main news?
iOS 17.1
New default sound for notifications
Starting with iOS 17.1, Apple will adopt a new notification sound for apps other than Messages. Currently adopting “Note” as the default ringtone universally, Apple will now use the “Rebound” in other software.
Interestingly, some people have reported that the new default sound has been active since the official launch of iOS 17 — for others (like me), “Note” still remains as the notification sound for all apps.
Settings for Standby mode
The way On hold (Stand By) has gained a series of new adjustments, which include the new “Display” section, which allows you to do things like turn off the screen automatically, following 20 seconds or never.
The new option, however, will only be available for iPhones 14 and 15 in the Pro line — which is understandable, given that they are the only ones that support the Always-On Screen.
Other news
Codes in the beta suggest that Apple is planning to launch a 3rd generation Apple Pencil with USB-C — but the mentions may only refer to the adapter for recharging the 1st generation Apple Pencil with the 10th generation iPad; The application Daily (Journal) continues without showing his face; Options for counting battery cycles and establishing an 80% charging limit for the iPhone remain restricted to iPhones 15, but now it is finally working as expected — in the first beta, the device continued to recharge even with the option activated. Beta 2 also brings back all new ringtones that were launched with iOS 17, but had simply “disappeared” in beta 1.
Double Tap no watchOS 10.1
The long awaited Double Tap (Double Tap), a feature that will make it easier to use the Apple Watch with a double pinch gesture, has finally made its appearance. Simply tap your index finger and thumb twice to answer a call, reply to a message, or perform other smart actions.
In iOS 17.1, it will be possible to apply some customizations to the feature, such as controlling what happens when activating the gesture while playing a song or choosing between forward and select when using it with the smart stack, for example.
The feature, it is worth remembering, will only be available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — the only ones with the S9 processor.
Warranty information in macOS Sonoma 14.1
It has been possible to consult details regarding the warranty of Apple devices connected to the iPhone for a long time, but now this can also be done on Macs starting with macOS Sonoma 14.1.
In the future update, a new section “Roof” (in the “General” menu of System Settings) will offer warranty information for both the Mac itself and select Bluetooth devices that are paired with it.
visionOS 1.0
Notes App
The Apple Vision Pro operating system continues to be fully developed and has just gained one of the native apps that had not yet appeared, the Grades.
On the device, the app will have an interface whose structure is very similar to that of macOS. It even has a traditional welcome screen detailing some of the features present in its “space” version.
Among these features are the possibility of using it with Bluetooth keyboards and trackpads for faster editing and, as the OS codes indicate, the ability to lock notes using Optic ID.
New codes
The developer Steve Moser found other interesting things in the system codes:
The TV app now has options for the user to continue watching a program in 2D or 3D; There is a warning when the user uses headphones that are not optimized for the Apple Vision Pro (anything other than the 2nd generation AirPods); Another alert will indicate that it is not possible to watch a video or spatial image when the user tries to rotate such media through the Shortcuts app.
What did you think of the news? We will continue to observe and report any new interesting discoveries in the new betas!
