With the presentation of the iOS 17, several new features were announced; As usual, however, not everyone arrived with the first version of the new system. Some will be incorporated into subsequent updates, along with other new features not previously announced.
This will be the case with the application Daily (Journal), included in the presentation of iOS 17 at WWDC23, but which until now has not actually reached users. It, however, is present in the first beta version of the iOS 17.2 and should finally reach everyone with the future update.
It will be possible to record not only text but also up to 13 photos, podcasts and music listened to, as well as audio recordings and workouts. There is also the option to highlight moments, with the app’s suggestions of what to add using machine learning — a feature that can also be extended to other diary apps. The application can also be protected with Face ID/Touch ID or the device code; records are end-to-end encrypted.
As highlighted by 9to5Mac, the Diary will also display suggestions in the form of questions, to inspire writing. It will also be possible to browse the days on which you have written entries, as well as mark some of them and filter them when searching. Another possibility is to create a writing schedule so you don’t forget to record the day.
App Apple TV
Another new feature of iOS 17.2 is what was previously a rumor: the redesign of the app Apple TV. In the beta version of tvOS 17.2, it is now possible to view the vertical column that aims to make navigation in the application simpler, in order to access different content, including channels, without leaving the app you are in.
The tvOS 17.2 developer beta has been released and it comes with our first look at the app’s new navigation @AppleTV…
The new version, however, still includes the iTunes movie and series apps, which were speculated to no longer exist. Furthermore, according to 9to5Macthe resource Enhance Dialogue (Enhance Dialogue), available when connecting a HomePod to an Apple TV, was also included in the new version of the system. On iOS, the interface now places more emphasis on content in the “Watch Now” section
iMessage Contact Key Check
Another novelty, as remembered by MacRumorsarriving with iOS 17.2 is the iMessage Contact Key Check. The feature uses Key Transparency to enable automatic checks, in a process where the iMessage key distribution service returns the keys used for login to an auditable and verifiable map.
Thus, when enabling verification, the user will receive a notification when there are validation errors in both iMessage conversations and Apple ID settings. It will also be possible to carry out the process in person, via FaceTime or another secure call, as well as add a public key to someone’s contact.
The purpose of this feature is to ensure you are actually talking to the person you think you are, with a focus on users facing security threats. This way, if an unknown device logs into the other person’s account, for example, you will receive a notification. To work, however, all users’ devices will need to be running iOS/iPadOS 17.2 and/or macOS Sonoma 14.2.
Also in iMessage, as remembered by 9to5Mac, it is now possible to react to a message using any emoji or sticker. Simply select the “New Sticker” option when tapping and holding on a message, as demonstrated at WWDC23.
Translate in Action button
The new system will also bring another potential function to the action button of the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max. This feature is quite new, having arrived with the change of the side button on the new high-end models. When pressing the button with this option selected, a popup is displayed at the top and the iPhone listens to what is being said to translate it, in the latest languages defined in the app.
iOS 17.2 includes a translation option for the Action button.
The new option is in the same place, within Settings, as the other existing ones. Just swipe between the available ones to get to it.
Please note, as highlighted by MacRumorsthat Apple had already promised that the Translate app option would be added to the button’s capabilities, even if it would take longer than the launch of the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max.
Apple Music
Also in the list of new features of iOS 17.2 will be features already known from Apple Music. One of them is a new “Favorites” playlist automatically generated from the songs marked in your library. According to the 9to5MacApple warned that, in the beta version, the playlist may take a while to appear.
Another new feature is collaborative playlists, with an option to invite other people, who will be able to add, remove and reorder songs, in addition to using emojis to react to songs in the new interface of songs being played. It will also be possible to generate a link to collaborate with the playlist. By doing so, users will be able to choose whether they need to manually approve each person’s access to the list.
Furthermore, the new version of the system includes a new Focus mode filter, with the possibility of associating the option to disable the recording of songs heard with a feature mode. Therefore, when you add the filter to a mode and activate it, what you listen to on Apple Music will not be included in your history or shared with friends.
The new feature is great for automating the option at specific times when you want to disable the addition of songs to the history. By disabling this, your recommendations will not be affected by what you hear, nor will it be shown to your friends.
New widgets and other news
Finally, some more widget options were added. The Weather app gained three new ones, which display details regarding the weather forecast, forecasts for the next few days and information regarding sunrise/sunset for the defined location. The Clock also gained an option displaying the time in digital format.
By creating a Contact Poster, it became possible to use, according to 9to5Mac, a rainbow text option. The Books app, in turn, gained a faster animation option when turning between pages of a book with iOS 17.2. It is also possible now, as remembered by BGRprioritize the audio of the coaches’ voice Apple Fitness+ during a workout, via a Focus mode.
Ufa! A lot, right? All of this will still be tested by beta users until an update arrives for everyone, which should occur in the coming months.
