In addition to Barbies with all kinds of ethnic backgrounds, toy manufacturer Mattel is now also making a doll with Down syndrome. The company wants to combat stigmatization and teach children empathy.
The face and body of the new doll are, according to Mattel, “a faithful representation of women with Down syndrome”. Compared to other dolls, this Barbie is slightly shorter and the ears, nose bridge and eyes are different, says the toy manufacturer.
The new Barbie’s necklace consists of the three arrows often used to indicate Down syndrome.
“Playing with a doll that looks different from them may help children develop greater understanding and empathy for them,” said Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s head of the Barbie division.
The new inclusive Barbie line also includes dolls in a wheelchair, dolls with a prosthetic leg, dolls with a hearing aid and dolls with a skin condition.
