A situation reminiscent of that of the Arcachon basin, in Gironde, under a similar ban since Wednesday December 27. These measures will be lifted as soon as the health quality of the shellfish becomes fully satisfactory once more.
“Recreational shellfish fishing is also prohibited,” specifies the prefect of Calvados in his press release.

“Consignments of shellfish harvested from these areas must be withdrawn from sale”
This ban is motivated by the same reasons which led the Gironde prefecture to take similar measures this week for oysters produced in the Arcachon basin, namely “cases of collective food poisoning”, explained the prefecture. of Calvados in a press release. “The symptoms are those of acute gastroenteritis,” she said. The “traceability surveys and analyzes carried out on farmed oysters indicate that contamination of oysters from” the sectors cited “is in question”, according to the prefecture.
The prefect of Calvados also “temporarily prohibits fishing, harvesting and marketing activities intended for human consumption of shellfish from the aforementioned areas”. “The batches of shellfish harvested in these areas must be withdrawn from sale,” added the prefecture. In its press release, it also asks “people who have shellfish from these areas not to consume them and to return them to the points of sale” and also emphasizes that “recreational shellfish fishing is also prohibited”.
A hard blow for oyster farmers
These ban measures “only concern the two sectors of Grandcamp-Maisy and Géfosse-Fontenay: no other production zone in Calvados is concerned” and “these measures will be lifted as soon as the health quality of the shellfish has returned to full health. satisfactory,” adds the prefecture.
These temporary bans are a hard blow for oyster farmers, because the end-of-year holidays are one of the main periods for oyster consumption.
