New Audi A5 and A5 Avant, make way for curves

Aesthetically, the new A5 does not revolutionize the Audi style, nor that of the A4 which it obviously replaces. We find the classics with the huge single frame grille surrounded by elongated lights at an angle for a mean “look”. However, it takes on curves with the wings that widen and round. The openings of the shield are also becoming rounded. The curves also gain the front optical blocks. The optical blocks incorporate a daytime light signature made of small squares.

Overall, the curves are visible from certain angles, but also at the rear. The wings receive a more significant curve at the rear. This curve continues in the rear lights which are also rounded compared to previous Audi years. The lights are connected by a strip with a rounded profile. More stretched than before, they retain a complex signature. This is not a new feature since they are already found on the Q6 for example. We will note particular handles. Well, overall, it is an Audi.

Inside, there are screens. A Audi MMI panoramic display curved is oriented towards the driver. It is composed of two screens, a first for the dashboard instruments of 11.9 inches, completed by a 14.5-inch touch screen that uses OLED technology. It is completed by a passenger screen which adopts “Privacy” technology. This blocks the vision from the driver’s seat and allows the passenger to use it for anything other than driving, navigation, etc. The main screen takes the overall shape of the single frame.

In the current fashion of interiors, the dashboard is very horizontal. Audi accentuates this side with a clear dividing line between the dashboard and the center console. The steering wheel is a bit at odds with the design of the car since it has marked creases. It groups together functional buttons. The rest of the interior is regarding (some would say austere) illuminated by ambient lighting.

New platform, improved efficiency

Technically, these new A5s are built on the Plateforme Premium Combustion (PPC). Both silhouettes have an identical length, 4.829 m, which was practically already the case with the A4. Precisely compared to the A4, this A5 grows by “only” 67 mm. Everything is reflected in the increase in the wheelbase which reaches 2.90 m once morest 2.82 m previously.

Under the hood, for the launch, we will find a 2.0 TFSI de 110 kW (150 ch) entry-level model. Audi announces a combined consumption in l/100 km: 6.7 – 7.4; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 151 – 169. This engine will be available in version 204 ch (150 kW). This TFSI uses a variable geometry turbo and modified mapping. This 4-cylinder is coupled to a dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. The 150 kW can also have quattro drive.

On the Diesel side, we find a 2.0 TDI 150 kW (204 ch) combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 4.8 – 5.4; combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 125 – 143. It retains the technology of adapting combustion according to the pressure in the cylinders. It uses a technology MHEV+ 48V. The electric motor-generator has been improved for greater efficiency.

Finally, the Audi S5 is entitled to a V6 TFSI de 3 litres who develops 270 kW or 367 horsepower. The turbo is also variable geometry for greater engine flexibility, and it is moving to electrification with the 48-volt MHEV+ once more. It is coupled to a dual-clutch S Tronic transmission. Audi announces a combined consumption in l/100 km: 7.5 – 7.9; combined CO2 emissions in g/km
: 170 – 179. This still gives a penalty of between €8,770 and €20,569!

Even the entry-level petrol version will be penalized at a minimum of €2,370, up to €7,959. The TDI will be the least penalized with between €210 and €1,276 of penalty.

Produced at the Audi site in Neckarsulmthe new Audi A5 will be offered in France at an entry price of 45 000 euros and will include standard navigation, a power rear liftgate and a phone holder with inductive charging.
