The Quebec government has announced that the first construction work on the new Athanase-David bridge, which connects Highway 19 between Laval and Bois-des-Filion, will begin in mid-May.
This new structure will be built to the east of the current bridge.
The latter will instead be repaired, which will make it possible to use the two infrastructures in the long term. Together, they will offer three traffic lanes, as well as a reserved lane for public transit, carpooling and electric vehicles, in each direction.
“The people of the North Shore and Laval are eager to see the extension of the A-19 come to fruition, and with the start of work for the new Athanase-David bridge, it is a concrete step that we are taking in the realization of this major project for the region,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Canadian Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, in a press release.
In addition, a public information session on the project and future interventions will be held on Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m., at the Chalet des citoyen de Bois-des-Filion.
The Department also specified that this work will result in complete and partial evening and night closures of the highway and service roads between Highway 400 and Saint-Martin Boulevard for 21 weeks. When motorists can drive, the limit will be reduced to 70 km/h on the site. More details will be revealed on the sidelines of the closings.
Project details
The Autoroute 19 extension project, which will cost $899.4 million, is being carried out between boulevards Saint-Martin Est, in Laval, and Industriel, in Bois-des-Filion.
Built in the current axis of Route 335, it extends over 11.8 kilometers and consists of constructing a dual carriageway with three lanes in each direction. A multipurpose path for cyclists, pedestrians, off-road vehicles and agricultural vehicles will also be provided on the bridge.
The project is being carried out in six separate lots. The first involved the construction of the Saint-Saëns interchange, which began in the fall of 2021 and will run until 2023. The construction of the new bridge to the east of the Athanase-David bridge is the second batch of works, while the design of the other stages continues in parallel.
The commissioning of the motorway extension is still scheduled for the end of 2027. (N.P.)
