Code Found in iOS 16.3 Suggests Apple Is Close to Re-Releasing the new architecture of the Home application (Home). Postponed indefinitely, it had originally been released in December, but was taken down following causing a series of problems on user devices.
The code in question was found by @icolas09F9 and @aaronp613 and cites the second version of “hh2” — possibly the acronym for “home hub 2”. As noted by MacRumorsthis might indicate that the architecture has been being tested by Apple internally for some time.
Under development at least since the announcement of iOS 16 at WWDC22, the new architecture promises to improve reliability and communication between smart home accessories and Apple devices.
The HomePod’s Sound Recognition Feature [mini] — promised for spring in the northern hemisphere —, for example, is a novelty that depends on this new architecture to function. The first version of the software, however, caused many devices to disconnect or get stuck in an “update” or “setup” status.
Apple stopped short of disclosing a second release date when it decided to take the new architecture offline last month. However, given the presence of this code in the latest version of iOS, it is quite possible that it will appear in the first beta version of iOS 16.4 – which should be released in the coming weeks.
