With the publication of Forms Forms Forms, X ARCHITEKTEN presents a monograph that provides exclusive insight into their conceptual approach. The detailed description of their methods gives the reader a “look over the shoulder” to gain a deeper understanding of architectural forms.
The book invites you to experience the change in concepts and the constant realignment of the design processes at X ARCHITEKTEN up close. Each project presented serves as an example to highlight the respective conceptual position and make the architectural language of X ARCHITEKTEN visible. This common thread runs through 60 selected, very different projects – from the “KTM Motohall” to the parking garage and the pastoral care for Voestalpine to “Waving Hands”, an installation for the European Capital of Culture Graz 2003.
“Words form shapes,” is the title of Wolfgang Pauser’s essay in the book. “Language and speaking are the starting points of future architecture.” The architecture of the The nine terms “stretch, unite, fold, borrow, cut, stack, connect, gather and transform“ reflect the conceptual essence and guide the readership not chronologically through the projects, but along an analytical and at the same time metaphorical structure. “The meaning of a stacked building lies in the fact that it was stacked, i.e. that the form was found following the previously decided guideline of the form concept of stacking,” says Pauser.
In his essay, Robert Temel uses “stacked functions” or buildings “cut into the ground” to highlight the potential for economical land use. “The conceptual terms in X ARCHITEKTEN, nine of which structure this publication, can all be related in one way or another to the topic of soil protection,” sums up Temel.
In addition to those already mentioned and the editor Manuela Hötzl, other contributors include the graphic studio Studio WHY, Wojciech Czaja, Manisha Jothady, Andreas Kump and David Schreyer. FORMEN FORMEN FORMEN was published by the Swiss publisher Park Books and is available in stores (ISBN 978-3-03860-371-9).
