Scientists have found 8 different species off the coast of Antarctica

Researchers on board an exploration vessel have unearthed an unprecedented animal species near the Antarctic shores. Dubbed the Antarctic Strawberry Feather Star, the discovery was made during a study conducted from 2008 to 2017. Details of the discovery were recently published in the journal “Invertebrate Systematics.”

The animal is closely related to the starfish and the sea cucumber, sharing several characteristics with them. However, the Strawberry Feather stands out for its size – significantly larger than that of the starfish – and its singular appearance, often referred to as “alien” in the international media.

Greg Ross, a member of the research team that identified the new species, compared the animal’s appearance to that of a strawberry. With 20 delicate arms, this animal can measure up to 20 cm in length.

While exploring off the Antarctic coast, scientists discovered eight distinct species. These creatures swim in a unique way, different from other known marine species. Their habitat is at a depth of about 20 meters below the surface of the sea, and their coloring varies from beige to dark red. The characterization of these species has been made possible thanks to recent technological advances and DNA analysis.
