AMD has invested in developing chips to bring PC gaming to more portable devices, but without sacrificing the graphics experience as much. Last month, the company said it was working on Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors, which will be used in the Asus ROG Ally, a device created to compete with Valve’s Steam Deck. Now, AMD has announced the Ryzen 7840U, which will be used in thin and light notebooks, popularly known as ultrabooks.
New AMD processor for notebooks beats Apple’s M2
The new AMD processor will feature sixteen threads and 8 cores, with a maximum clock speed of 5.1GHz. There will be an integrated graphics chip containing a Radeon 780M GPU, which has 12 cores and is clocked at up to 2.7GHz. According to the graphs made available by the company to show the Ryzen 7840U’s performance, it would surpass the Apple Silicon M2 in application performance. Furthermore, it is noted that the new AMD chip also outperforms the Core i7 1360P and its Iris Xe GPU in applications and games.
The AMD Ryzen 7040U will be the first in a series of processors with integrated Radeon 700M GPUs. According to TheVerge, the company’s new chips will be used by Frameworkm, a laptop company with upgradeable hardware, as well as Razer, Acer, Lenovo, HP and others.
There is still no information regarding the energy efficiency of the Ryzen 7040U or the FPS rate in games it is capable of delivering. However, it looks like AMD is trying to be more aggressive in the mobile device market.
