The Asian Football Confederation said yesterday that “Saudi Arabia will host the finals of the first two editions of the new AFC Champions League, which will start next year.”
The new continental club championship will replace the current version, starting in September next year, with the participation of the best 24 clubs on the continent, divided into two groups that will be competed in a league system in the east and west of the continent.
The teams will compete to advance to the round of 16, through two matches: one for the first leg and the other for the return, while the eight winning teams will advance to the finals round, which will be held in one place, and includes: (the rounds of eight, the semi-finals and the final), through one match in each stage.
This step comes within the framework of a comprehensive review of club championships in Asia, which also included raising the value of the first prize for the first continental club championship to 12 million dollars, following it was only four million.
The Asian Football Confederation said in a statement: “Saudi Arabia won the rights to host the first two editions of the new tournament finals, following beating a bid submitted by the Iraqi Federation for the popular game, following evaluating the aspects of infrastructure and accommodation.”
The federation’s statement added, “Saudi Arabia has temporarily obtained hosting rights for an additional three years, provided that this is confirmed following evaluating the performance in the first two editions.”
