From June 2 to 6, the congress of the American Society of Clinical Oncology brought together the international scientific and medical community in oncology in Chicago (United States). The greatest experts, including doctors and researchers from the Institut Curie, unveiled studies, results and new therapeutic strategies once morest cancer. Notable advances in the treatment of cancers of the lung, breast, uterus, ovaries and rectum have, in particular, been pointed out by the experts. Professor Steven Le Gouill, director of the Institut Curie Hospital Complex, tells us a bit more.

Today, are we talking regarding cure or remission of cancer?

If we speak globally, yes there are cancers that can be cured. Will Mr. or Mrs. X’s cancer be 100% cured, that’s harder to say. It is certain that, when we speak of cancer in general, life expectancy has increased very significantly, all of this is linked to our knowledge of cancer. We treat better because we understand better. There has been progress in almost all cancers. And we have made great progress every year. But, from there to guaranteeing Mr. X that there is no risk of relapse, it is more complicated to say. There are cancers with a good prognosis with a survival of more than 95% [?à 5 ans NDLR] but if you are part of the 5%…

Precisely, what are the cancers with a good prognosis and the less good?

Hodgkin lymphomas, cancers of the testicles, kidneys, thyroid, are, for example, cancers with a good prognosis today. The prognosis of Hodgkin’s disease is generally very good with an overall survival of more than 90%. But some cancers still need progress, such as certain forms of breast cancer, T-cell lymphomas, pancreatic cancer, which are cancers with less good diagnosis.

What is the most curable cancer today?

The one that we heal the best is the one that we don’t have! 40% of cancers are preventable. By quitting smoking for example… Lung cancer is the one that increases the most in women, while it decreases in men.

Since when can we say that there have been such advances?

There was a real acceleration in the early 2000s with Imatinib (trade name: Glivec), a targeted therapy used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia. With this tablet, the life expectancy of patients is almost the same as people who do not have this leukemia. Everything accelerated from there. Then there was the advent of immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and the combination of these treatments. We are now able to combine molecules to overcome certain cancers. To say that one day all cancers will be curable is not something shocking, it’s a matter of time.
