The green light has been granted for the construction of a new 90 meter high residential tower in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, which should house a total of around 164 housing units, the Brussels Secretary of State for Urban Planning and at Heritage, Ans Persoons (Vooruit).
The future skyscraper, built on an abandoned block located between Avenue Charles Quint and Chaussée de Zellik, will include several types of housing units – from studios to four-bedroom apartments – all over 28 floors. With the ambition of erecting a “new symbolic landmark” at the northern entrance to the city for those arriving by car from Ghent, Ans Persoons emphasizes that “in certain places in Brussels, it is necessary to be able to build high up, and this is the case on this site at the entrance to the city”.
“We must continue to provide housing in the capital, in order to keep rental prices affordable and allow many people to find housing in the city,” she adds. This slender tower, whose client will be the Life Tree group, will thus become an “urban lighthouse recognizable to all”, according to the Secretary of State.
By transforming a neglected urban block into a residential and commercial space, “the ‘Porta Agatha’ tower will bring new life to the neighborhood and offer a welcoming image at the entrance to Brussels, while promoting the economic development of the municipality”, supports the mayor of Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Christian Lamouline (Les Engagés). He sees the project as a “unique opportunity” which must be integrated into the overall reflection carried out around the re-enchantment of the municipal station district.
