Nevada Couple Arrested after Child Found in Metal Enclosure
A shocking incident unfolded in Nevada when authorities discovered an 11-year-old child confined within a large metal enclosure. Misty Scanlan, 46, and Jeffery Scanlan, 41, were arrested and booked on charges of child abuse and neglect, according to a statement released by the Henderson Police Department. The arrest was made following a truancy report from the school district.
Reports indicate that a truant officer had visited the Scanlan home after a child was reported missing from school. Upon arriving at the house, the officer heard screams coming from inside and immediately requested backup from the police. It took the father 40 minutes to open the door for the authorities. Once inside, the officers discovered the 11-year-old boy locked inside a large enclosure with metal bars, resembling a jail cell.
The father explained to the police that the boy had severe Autism spectrum disorder, which the father claimed led to frequent uncontrollable outbursts. The metal enclosure was allegedly used as a means to control these outbursts. Shockingly, the child was found wearing a diaper and had feces smeared throughout the enclosure.
Further investigation revealed that the rest of the house was in a deplorable condition. Barely any furniture was present, and feces were found smeared on the walls in other bedrooms. The mother admitted to attempting to clean the bedrooms and cage regularly, but it had been a while since the last cleaning.
Child protective services intervened and took custody of the three other children in the home. The 11-year-old boy was sent to the hospital for further evaluation and care.
The Scanlans were booked into Henderson County Detention Center but were released the following day on a $5,000 bond each. They are set to appear in court in May to face the charges against them.
